I have to begin this post with a disclaimer. I don’t do maternity photos. Now that I’ve got that out of the way, here are some maternity photos.
All joking aside, maternity photos are definitely a genre I’ve never been very interested in. I think a lot of photographers are against it purely for artistic reasons. And to be honest, 99% of the photos out there are terrible. So it’s easy for us “artist” types to look down on maternity photos and to refuse to do them on principle alone. But there comes a time when some artists mature to the point where all those pretentious notions about artistic idealism are realized for the crap that they are. No genre is inherently worth less than any other genre, no matter how many within that genre are producing absolute cliche fluff. It’s all about how you approach it. Does that mean I’ll do any maternity shoot that comes my way? Absolutely not. I only do these on a very selective basis. And Charlie definitely met my criteria.
Two years ago I was lucky enough to meet Charlie and her then fiancé Nic when they hired me to shoot their wedding. It was such a beautiful wedding, and easily still one of my favorites I’ve ever shot. And now here they are starting their family. Charlie and Nic invited me to their new home they just recently moved into, and one of the first things you see are my photos of their wedding on their wall. Their house is still not completely “moved in”, yet they already have their photos hanging. It really brings things into perspective how lucky I am to be a part of their lives in their most important moments, giving them images they cherish and can look back on for years to come. Artistic pretension be damned, this is what I love to shoot.

Just beautifully Jon. And I love what you had to say about genres. It really is all about what you make it. Gah, all of these are beautiful, but of course I’m partial to those polaroids…
Thanks, Jade! I’m pretty partial to the polaroids myself
Beautiful!!! I love the sweet moments of them together!
Thanks, Laura!
Jon- Thank you again so much. You have a way of capturing such intimate moments that Nic and I can cherish for a lifetime. It makes me a little teary eyed. You are truly talented.
Entirely my pleasure. Let me know when you want photos of the little one when the time comes
WOW– Jon these are really, really amazing!
Thanks so much Kirstie!
Absolutely Beautiful photographs! I’d bury any reservations you have about the genre…
